Understanding over answers
A numerical answer without context teaches nothing. Every solution we generate is structured as a step-by-step walkthrough with the method named and the reasoning explained — because the exam won’t let you upload a photo.
No friction between problem and help
Registration walls, download prompts, and mandatory account creation all exist to serve the product, not the student. We’ve removed every barrier we can between seeing a problem and getting help with it.
Honest about what we can and can’t do
When image recognition is uncertain, we say so explicitly rather than silently proceeding to a wrong answer. When a problem type falls outside our current scope, we tell you rather than generating plausible-looking nonsense.
Why Existing Tools Fall Short
The search-and-hope loop
The standard workflow when a student gets stuck: search for a similar problem online, find an example that’s close but not identical, try to adapt the solution, realize the values are different, get confused, try a different search. This loop can consume 30 minutes for a problem that should take 5.
The alternative — typing the exact problem into a solver — requires a keyboard interface that doesn’t understand handwriting, fraction notation, or physics diagrams. Students spend more time entering the problem than solving it.
What we do differently
SolveFromImage eliminates the translation step entirely. The problem exists as an image — a photo, a screenshot, a scan. We accept it in that form, read it, and return a solution structured around the specific problem in front of the student, not a generic example they have to interpret and adapt.
The step-by-step format is deliberate. Students who understand the method can solve variations of the same problem on an exam. Students who only have an answer cannot. We’re optimizing for the exam, not just the homework.

Design Principles Behind the Tool
Show the detected input first
The expression read from your image is always displayed before the solution. A wrong answer caused by a misread is far worse than no answer — users need to verify the input before trusting the output.
Exact results, not approximations
We use symbolic computation, not numerical methods. x = 1/3 is more useful in a homework context than x ≈ 0.333. Exact forms match what textbooks and teachers expect.
Speed is a feature
A tool that takes 45 seconds breaks the study flow. The full pipeline — image processing through step output — runs in under 10 seconds because waiting is its own form of friction.
Fail loudly, not silently
If we can’t confidently read an image or solve a problem type, we say so explicitly. A confident wrong answer is worse than an honest “we couldn’t parse this” — users deserve to know when to seek another source.
Label the method, not just the step
Each step in a solution is labeled with the technique applied — “Chain Rule,” “Quadratic Formula,” “Limiting Reagent Method.” The label is what connects the worked example to future problems of the same type.
Images are not stored
Uploaded images are processed in memory and discarded after the solution is returned. Homework photos contain personal context — student names, school identifiers, class materials — that we have no business retaining.
